Would play hockey on the frozen Muskegon River.
Looked forward to the summer time. On Clear Lake (6 miles away), would swim, sail, go boating and canoeing. Every summer the circus would come to town by train. He would get jobs putting up the tents and pulling the big ropes to raise the tent. Liked the trains coming through the town. His grandpa on his mother’s side was an agent at the station. He and friends would go the depot and watch the trains come in.
Hobbies included drawing and painting. Started at an early age and drew a lot in his spare time. Would play hide-n-seek, cards, checkers and later on, chess.
Some of his chores were to get the coal out of the coal bin and put in the coal furnace.

His grandparents lived a block north of their house, right on the river bank.
